Use of Weapons

The novel follows Cheradenine Zakalwe, a former soldier who is recruited by the advanced, AI-driven Culture society to intervene in wars and conflicts across the galaxy. Zakalwe struggles with deep psychological trauma from his aristocratic, war-torn past.

The book famously alternates between two narrative threads: one moving forward chronologically and another moving backward chronologically toward a pivotal, traumatic event in Zakalwe's past. The two timelines eventually converge in the novel's climax to reveal a massive plot twist.

Zakalwe is monitored and supported by a Culture drone named Skaffen-Amtiskaw. The drone possesses vast technological power and a sharp, sarcastic personality, frequently clashing with Zakalwe.

Published in 1990, it is the third novel in Iain M. Banks's acclaimed Culture space opera series. Like other books in the series, it can largely be read as a standalone story, though it explores the core themes of the Culture's interventionist policies.
