Why is the film called The Forty-First?

Red Army sniper Maryutka has already killed 40 White soldiers when Lieutenant Govorukha-Otrok becomes her next target. He is the intended forty-first shot, but circumstances force her to guard him as a prisoner instead.

How do Maryutka and the White officer become stranded together?

Their boat is wrecked while the Red detachment transports the captured lieutenant across the Aral Sea. Maryutka and Govorukha-Otrok reach an isolated island, where hostility gradually develops into love.
