The Guardian Legend is a 1988 action-adventure game developed by Compile that blends two distinct gameplay genres. It seamlessly alternates between top-down adventure exploration and vertical-scrolling shoot 'em up mechanics. This unique hybrid design set it apart from other Nintendo titles of the era.

The game was developed by Compile and served as a follow-up to their 1986 title, Guardic. It was released across Japan, North America, and Europe between 1988 and 1990 by different publishers, including Irem, Broderbund, and Nintendo respectively. This wide publishing spread helped it reach a global audience.

When exploring the labyrinth areas, players control the protagonist in human form, navigating doors and unlocking pathways in a Zelda-like format. However, during boss battles or specific corridor zones, the character transforms into an attack ship, switching to a shooter format. This constant shifting of playstyles is its defining mechanic.

The game follows a female cyborg named Miria who is tasked with exploring a massive, drifting alien world called Naju. She must navigate its depths, defeat the hostile inhabitants, and activate the self-destruct sequence to prevent Naju from crashing into Earth. The narrative is revealed entirely through the game's environmental exploration.
