It is the opening volume of the Aspect-Emperor trilogy, taking place approximately twenty years after the events of his earlier Prince of Nothing series. The narrative follows Anasurimbor Kellhus as he assembles the Great Ordeal, a massive military campaign designed to confront the ancient threat of the Consult.

The book is intended for readers of dark and epic fantasy who are familiar with the preceding series.
