The Manananggal

The Manananggal is a terrifying, vampire-like creature from Philippine mythology. It appears as a normal human during the day but transforms into a hideous monster at night.

To hunt, the Manananggal physically separates its upper body from its lower half, sprouting giant bat-like wings. It then flies through the night sky, leaving its vulnerable lower torso behind on the ground.

The Manananggal primarily preys on sleeping humans, using its elongated proboscis-like tongue to feed. It is especially feared for targeting pregnant women and feeding on the hearts of fetuses.

The most common way to defeat a Manananggal is to find its abandoned lower torso and sprinkle salt, ash, or crushed garlic on the open wound. This prevents the upper half from reattaching, causing the creature to die at sunrise.
