The Seafarer

The Seafarer is set on Christmas Eve in Baldoyle, a coastal suburb of Dublin, and follows a man named Sharky who returns home to care for his blind brother Richard. A group of men gather for a night of drinking and poker, but the arrival of a mysterious stranger named Mr. Lockhart raises the stakes to a matter of souls.

The Seafarer was first produced in 2006 at the National Theatre in London, specifically the Cottesloe Theatre. It later transferred to Broadway's Booth Theatre in 2007, earning multiple Tony Award nominations including Best Play.

The stranger, Mr. Lockhart, is revealed to be the Devil, who has come to collect on a soul during the Christmas Eve poker game. He previously lost Sharky's soul in a card game years earlier and has returned for a rematch.

The Seafarer blends dark comedy with supernatural horror, which is characteristic of Conor McPherson's playwriting style. While the banter among the Dublin men provides humor, the play builds toward genuinely tense and unsettling supernatural confrontations.
