The X Factor

The UK X Factor has launched the careers of massive global superstars, most notably the boyband One Direction and solo artist Leona Lewis. Other famous winners and contestants include Little Mix, who became the first group to win the competition in 2011. The show was a powerhouse in the music industry for over a decade on ITV.

The X Factor was created by Simon Cowell and his production company, Syco Entertainment. It premiered on the ITV network in the UK in 2004, designed as a replacement for the hit show Pop Idol. Cowell's signature blunt judging style was a major factor in the show's massive international success.

Unlike other singing competitions, The X Factor places contestants into specific categories based on age or group size, such as Boys, Girls, Over 25s, and Groups. Each category is mentored by a judge who guides them through the live shows. This mentorship format adds a unique layer of competition between the judges themselves.

Simon Cowell did not judge every single season of the UK X Factor. He left the UK panel after season 7 in 2010 to focus on launching the American version of the show on Fox. He eventually returned to the UK judging panel in 2014 to boost ratings before stepping back again in later years.
