description Thunder Hole (Acadia) Overview

Thunder Hole is a natural inlet and partially enclosed sea cave along the rocky coast of Acadia National Park on Mount Desert Island, Maine. Incoming waves force air into a narrow crevice and compress it, producing a thunder-like boom that can be heard from the surrounding shoreline. The site sits along the Park Loop Road and is one of the most frequently visited natural features within the national park.

help Thunder Hole (Acadia) FAQ

What time should I visit Thunder Hole to hear the boom?

The National Park Service recommends arriving one to two hours before high tide for the best chance. Heavy swell matters too, so even perfect tidal timing does not guarantee a dramatic boom.

Why does Thunder Hole make a thunder sound?

Incoming water enters a narrow rock channel and compresses air in a small cavern. The escaping air and water create the booming sound and can throw spray high above the inlet.

Is Thunder Hole safe during storms?

Storm surf can make the lower platform and nearby rocks extremely dangerous, and the National Park Service may close the steps. Rogue waves have swept visitors from the shoreline, so viewing closures and railings must be respected.

Can wheelchair users see Thunder Hole?

An accessible upper viewing area beside Park Loop Road overlooks the inlet. The stone stairs and lower deck are not wheelchair accessible, but the upper level has interpretive displays and coastal views.
