description Tillya Tepe Overview
Tillya Tepe is an archaeological site in northern Afghanistan containing six burial mounds excavated by a Soviet-Afghan team led by Viktor Sarianidi in 1978. The graves contained thousands of objects, including finely worked gold ornaments, weapons, coins, and other goods associated with nomadic elites. The finds are commonly called the Bactrian Gold and are generally dated to the first century CE.
