TOEFL iBT

The TOEFL iBT assesses Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing. Since the January 2026 update, ETS describes tasks such as completing words, responding to an interview, and writing for an academic discussion.

ETS offers the TOEFL iBT at authorized test centers and as the TOEFL iBT Home Edition with live remote proctoring. The available option depends on the country, appointment availability, and local testing rules.

For tests taken under the 2026 format, section and overall results use a 1-to-6 scale in half-band increments. ETS is also reporting a comparable 0-to-120 score during a two-year transition period after January 2026.

ETS says the updated test takes approximately two hours, not including directions. Because the test is adaptive, the number of items and exact timing can vary.
