TOI-700

description TOI-700 Overview

TOI-700 is a red dwarf star of spectral class M located approximately 101 light-years from Earth in the constellation Dorado. The star is host to at least three confirmed exoplanets, discovered by NASA's Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) mission. TOI-700 d, the outermost planet, orbits within the star's habitable zone and is approximately Earth-sized, making it one of the first such planets identified by TESS. The discovery of TOI-700 d was confirmed and announced by NASA in January 2020.

help TOI-700 FAQ

Why is TOI-700 important to exoplanet astronomers?

TOI-700 hosts TOI-700 d, the first roughly Earth-sized habitable-zone planet discovered by NASA's TESS mission. Its confirmation was announced in 2020, making the system an important target for studying potentially rocky worlds around red dwarfs.

How Earth-like is TOI-700 d?

TOI-700 d is about 20 percent larger than Earth and receives roughly 86 percent as much stellar energy as Earth receives from the Sun. Being in the habitable zone does not prove that it has liquid water, an atmosphere, or life.

How long does TOI-700 d take to orbit its star?

TOI-700 d completes an orbit in approximately 37 days. Its year is short because the planet orbits much closer to its cool M-dwarf host than Earth orbits the Sun.

Does TOI-700 have another planet in the habitable zone?

Yes, NASA announced TOI-700 e in 2023 as another approximately Earth-sized planet in the system's optimistic habitable zone. TOI-700 e orbits closer to the star than TOI-700 d and has a period of about 28 days.
