Tomsk

Tomsk is a major city located in southwestern Siberia, situated on the banks of the Tom River. It is notably the third-largest city in Russia by area, sprawling across a massive geographic footprint. Despite its vast size, it has a surprisingly dense population concentrated mainly in its historic and academic districts.

Tomsk is widely recognized as one of Russia's most prominent centers for higher education and scientific research. The city is home to over ten major universities and research institutions, including the prestigious Tomsk State University. Tomsk is historically famous for its incredibly intricate and well-preserved wooden houses featuring elaborate carved window frames and trim. These traditional Siberian wooden structures date back to the 19th and early 20th centuries, showcasing a unique architectural style. Many of these historic homes are currently being preserved as cultural monuments against the backdrop of modern Soviet-era buildings.

Travelers usually reach Tomsk by flying into Bogashevo Airport, which handles domestic flights connecting the Siberian city to Moscow and other major hubs. Alternatively, you can take the legendary Trans-Siberian Railway, which has a spur line running directly into the Tomsk region. Due to its inland location in southwestern Siberia, travel by car during winter can be quite challenging.
