Traversina Footbridge II

The bridge was designed by the renowned Swiss engineer Jürg Conzett, known for his innovative and minimalist structural designs. It was completed in 2005 as a replacement for an earlier structure that was destroyed by a rockslide.

This pedestrian suspension bridge spans the deep and dramatic Traversina Gorge in the canton of Graubünden, Switzerland. It serves as a crucial crossing point along the historic Via Mala hiking trail.

Conzett designed the bridge with a distinctive, spiraling, asymmetric cable structure that elegantly responds to the steep topography of the Viamala gorge. Instead of a traditional flat suspension, the bridge features a varied, inclined deck that shifts in width along its span.

The original Traversina Footbridge was destroyed in 1999 when a massive rockfall crushed the structure. The 2005 Traversina Footbridge II was built nearby but utilized a more resilient, elevated design to better withstand the region's geological hazards.
