help Trevi Fountain FAQ

Why do tourists throw coins into the Trevi Fountain?

According to local legend, throwing a coin over your left shoulder into the fountain guarantees your return to Rome in the future. It is estimated that roughly 3,000 euros are thrown into the fountain every day, which is collected and donated to Catholic charities.

Who is the central statue in the Trevi Fountain?

The massive central figure standing in a chariot is Oceanus, the god of all water. He is flanked by statues representing Abundance and Salubrity, representing the health and wealth that clean water brings to a city.

What is the source of the water for the Trevi Fountain?

The fountain is fed by the Acqua Vergine Antica, an ancient Roman aqueduct originally built by Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa in 19 BC. This aqueduct still supplies water to many of Rome's historic fountains today.

When was the Trevi Fountain completed?

Although architect Nicola Salvi began the project in 1732, it took thirty years to finish, officially opening in 1762. Salvi died before it was completed, and the final touches were overseen by Giuseppe Pannini.
