Tribal Rite

Tribal Rite is a trad climbing route on the granite face of El Capitan in Yosemite Valley, California. It follows a line of cracks and corners to the right of more famous routes like The Nose, offering a less crowded but highly technical big-wall experience.

Tribal Rite is rated 5.12a for the free climbing sections, making it a sustained and demanding big-wall trad route. The grade reflects the difficulty of individual pitches, but the real challenge lies in maintaining that level of performance across many pitches high on the wall.

Tribal Rite sees far fewer climbers than The Nose, which is the most popular route on El Capitan and frequently has queues during peak season. However, at 5.12a, Tribal Rite requires stronger free-climbing technique and more crack-specific skills than the majority of pitches on The Nose.

Climbers need a full trad rack with emphasis on small to mid-size cams and nuts to protect the thin cracks and corners that characterize the route. Standard Yosemite big-wall gear including a haulbag, portaledges for multi-day attempts, and adequate water and food supplies for an extended wall climb are also essential.
