Supercouloir

The Supercouloir is a classic alpine route on Mont-Blanc du Tacul, a satellite peak of the Mont Blanc massif in the French Alps. Climbers typically approach from the Cosmiques Refuge or the Aiguille du Midi, both of which sit at high altitude above the Chamonix Valley.

The route is rated in the TD range in the alpine grading system and features a long, continuous steep ice gully interspersed with sections of mixed rock, snow, and thin ice. Conditions vary dramatically throughout the season, with the ice typically fatter earlier in the year and more technical later on.

The most reliable window is generally from July through September, when stable high-pressure systems are more common and the approach from the Aiguille du Midi cable car is accessible. Earlier in the season, heavy snow and avalanche danger can make the route hazardous, while late season may leave thin or melted-out ice.

The Supercouloir demands solid alpine climbing skills including steep waterfall ice technique, efficient mixed climbing, and the ability to move quickly on complex, high-altitude terrain. Many climbers hire an IFMGA-certified guide from Chamonix if they lack extensive experience on similar alpine ice and mixed routes.
