Tsagaan Suvarga

The name translates from Mongolian as 'White Stupa,' reflecting the formation's visual resemblance to the tiered, pale stupas found in Buddhist religious architecture across Central and East Asia. The name reflects the deep influence of Tibetan Buddhism on Mongolian cultural geography.

The formation is an eroded escarpment created over millennia of wind and water erosion exposing layered sedimentary rock of varying colors, including pale limestone and bands of orange, red, and grey. The differential weathering of these sediment layers gives the cliff face its striped, ruin-like appearance.

Tsagaan Suvarga is a recognized tourist destination within the Gobi region, and visitors can explore the base of the formation and the surrounding desert landscape.
