description TSS Morro Castle Overview
The TSS Morro Castle was an American ocean liner built for the New York and Cuba Mail Steamship Company, commonly known as the Ward Line. On September 8, 1934, while traveling from Havana to New York, a severe fire broke out on board off the coast of New Jersey, killing 137 passengers and crew members. The captain, Robert Willmott, had died mysteriously in his cabin hours before the blaze, leaving an inexperienced officer in command. The disaster exposed severe flaws in shipboard fire safety and emergency procedures, prompting the U.S.
Congress to pass the Motorboat Act of 1940 and update maritime safety regulations.
