description SS Athenia Overview

The SS Athenia was a British transatlantic passenger liner operated by the Donaldson Line. On September 3, 1939, the same day Britain declared war on Germany, the ship was torpedoed by the German submarine U-30 while carrying passengers from Glasgow to Montreal. The attack resulted in the deaths of 117 people, including 28 Americans, making the SS Athenia the first British vessel sunk by enemy action during World War II.
