Bismarck was a German battleship commissioned into the Kriegsmarine during the Second World War. On its first operational sortie in May 1941, it fought British ships in the Denmark Strait and sank the battlecruiser HMS Hood, prompting an extensive Royal Navy pursuit. British aircraft disabled its steering, and surface warships attacked and sank it in the North Atlantic on 27 May, with only a small fraction of its crew surviving.

During the Battle of the Denmark Strait on 24 May 1941, a German shell reached Hood's ammunition spaces and triggered a catastrophic explosion. Only three of Hood's crew survived.
