description IJN Yamashiro Overview

Yamashiro was a Fuso-class battleship of the Imperial Japanese Navy, commissioned during the First World War and extensively modernized before the Second World War. She served as the flagship of Vice Admiral Shoji Nishimura's Southern Force during the Battle of Surigao Strait on 25 October 1944. The ship was sunk by American naval forces in that action, part of the Battle of Leyte Gulf and the last battle in which opposing battleships directly engaged one another.
