description HMS Hermes (95) Overview

HMS Hermes was a British aircraft carrier designed from the outset for aircraft operations and commissioned into the Royal Navy in 1924. On 9 April 1942, Japanese carrier aircraft sank her off Ceylon, now Sri Lanka, during the Indian Ocean raid; the Australian destroyer HMAS Vampire was also lost in the attack. Hermes had no aircraft aboard at the time and became the first purpose-built aircraft carrier sunk in combat.
