Turritopsis nutricula

Turritopsis nutricula has often been associated in popular accounts with the ability to revert from its adult medusa stage back to a polyp-like juvenile state through cellular transformation. However, much of the detailed scientific research on this rejuvenation phenomenon has actually focused on the closely related species Turritopsis dohrnii.

Turritopsis nutricula is a small hydrozoan jellyfish originally described from the western Atlantic Ocean. It belongs to the class Hydrozoa, meaning it has both polyp and medusa life stages, and has gained popular attention for its reported cellular rejuvenation abilities.

Through a process called transdifferentiation, Turritopsis nutricula can potentially transform its adult medusa cells back into polyp-like juvenile cells when under stress. However, much of the detailed research on this rejuvenation process has been conducted on the related species Turritopsis dohrnii rather than T. nutricula itself.
