Underwater wrestling, also called aquathlon, is a competitive pool sport in which two masked competitors wearing fins grapple underwater and try to remove a ribbon attached to the opponent's ankle band. The sport was created in the Soviet Union by underwater-sports coach Igor Ostrovsky and was first staged in Moscow in 1982. A match is fought in short rounds inside a marked pool area, with equipment that can include a diving mask, fins, water-polo cap, and colored ribbons.
