description V. D. Savarkar Overview
Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, commonly known as V. D. Savarkar, was an Indian nationalist, writer, and political thinker associated with the development of Hindutva. British authorities convicted him for revolutionary activity and in 1911 sent him to the Cellular Jail in the Andaman Islands, where he served a long prison sentence.
He later led the Hindu Mahasabha, and his writings remain part of debates about Indian independence, nationalism, secularism, and Hindu political identity.
