Hong Xiuquan

description Hong Xiuquan Overview

Hong Xiuquan (1814-1864) was the leader of the Taiping Rebellion in China. After reportedly experiencing visions, Hong came to believe he was the younger brother of Jesus Christ and began preaching a syncretic form of Christianity mixed with Chinese philosophical elements. In 1851, he established the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom and launched a massive rebellion against the Qing Dynasty. The Taiping movement controlled much of southern China, including Nanjing, which Hong made his capital.

The rebellion lasted until 1864 when Qing forces recaptured Nanjing, with Hong reportedly dying before the city's fall.
