description Li Zicheng Overview
Li Zicheng was a Chinese rebel leader who rose during the peasant uprisings that weakened the Ming dynasty in the seventeenth century. His forces entered Beijing in 1644, after which the Chongzhen Emperor died and Li proclaimed the Shun dynasty. Li was soon driven from the capital after the Ming general Wu Sangui allied with the Manchu regent Dorgon and Qing forces defeated the rebel army at the Shanhai Pass. He is studied in connection with the Ming-Qing transition and the collapse of Ming rule.
