Vincent Ogé

description Vincent Ogé Overview

Vincent Ogé was a free man of color in the French colony of Saint-Domingue who led an armed revolt in 1790. He demanded that colonial authorities enforce political rights recently extended to some free people of color, making the uprising part of the wider conflict over race, citizenship, and representation before the Haitian Revolution. Captured after fleeing the colony, Ogé was returned, tortured, and executed by breaking on the wheel in 1791. His death became a symbol of the colony's racial injustice and the limits imposed on free people of color.
