Constance Markievicz

description Constance Markievicz Overview

Constance Markievicz was an Irish republican, socialist, and suffragist who took part in the Easter Rising of 1916. She served with the Irish Citizen Army during the insurrection and was sentenced to death, though the sentence was commuted. In 1918 she became the first woman elected to the British House of Commons, as a Sinn Féin candidate, but did not take her seat because Sinn Féin abstained from Westminster. She later served in revolutionary Irish political institutions and remains associated with Irish independence and women's political participation.
