Newgrange

Newgrange is a Neolithic passage tomb built around 3200 BCE, making it over 5,000 years old. This means it was constructed centuries before the Great Pyramids of Giza and Stonehenge.

The tomb is precisely aligned so that the sunrise on the winter solstice illuminates its inner chamber. For about 17 minutes on a few mornings around December 21st, a beam of light travels through a special roofbox above the entrance.

It is located in County Meath, Ireland, within the Brú na Bóinne UNESCO World Heritage site. It sits on a elevated ridge overlooking the Boyne River valley.

While primarily a massive burial mound containing human remains, archaeologists believe it also held major religious and ceremonial significance. The solstice alignment strongly suggests it functioned as an ancient calendar and a center for sun worship.
