Luxor Temple

The temple was largely founded by Amenhotep III in the 14th century BCE, with major expansions added later by Ramesses II in the 13th century BC. It was also notably modified during the reigns of figures like Tutankhamun and Alexander the Great.

The temple was dedicated to the Theban triad, particularly the god Amun, his consort Mut, and their son Khonsu. It was the focal point of the annual Opet Festival, where statues of the gods were paraded from Karnak.

The temple is located in the modern city of Luxor, directly on the east bank of the Nile River in Egypt. It sits about three kilometers south of the massive Karnak Temple complex.

The front of the temple features a massive pylon and a pair of seated colossi statues of Ramesses II, along with the remaining base of a 25-meter obelisk. There is also a 14th-century CE Abu Haggag Mosque built directly on top of the ancient ruins.
