Vaccinium vitis-idaea

Vaccinium vitis-idaea is most widely known as the lingonberry, though it is also occasionally called the mountain cranberry. It is a small, evergreen shrub in the heath family, Ericaceae.

The lingonberry is a circumpolar shrub native to the boreal forests and Arctic tundra across the Northern Hemisphere. In Scandinavia, wild stands are heavily harvested, with Sweden alone producing tens of millions of kilograms annually.

Lingonberries are known for their distinctively tart and slightly sweet flavor profile. Because of their natural tartness, they are most commonly cooked and processed into jams, syrups, and sauces rather than eaten raw.

As an evergreen shrub adapted to subarctic climates, it retains its dark green, leathery leaves year-round to maximize photosynthesis. It typically grows low to the ground, allowing it to take advantage of the insulating snow cover during extreme cold.
