Vanguard 1

description Vanguard 1 Overview

Vanguard 1 is an American satellite launched on March 17, 1958, as part of the U.S. Navy's Vanguard project. It was the fourth satellite ever placed in Earth orbit, following Sputnik 1, Sputnik 2, and Explorer 1, and is the oldest human-made object still in orbit. Vanguard 1 was the first satellite to be powered by solar energy, using six small photovoltaic cells mounted on its body.

It transmitted signals until 1964 and continues to orbit Earth, though it is now non-functional and tracked as space debris.

insights Ranking position

Vanguard 1 ranks #31 of 100 in the Spacecraft ranking, behind Gemini 12, ahead of Chinese Space Station (Tiangong).

help Vanguard 1 FAQ

When was Vanguard 1 launched into space?

Is Vanguard 1 still in orbit around Earth?

Yes, Vanguard 1 is the oldest human-made object still orbiting the Earth today. Although communication with the satellite was lost in 1964, it remains in a stable, long-term orbit and is expected to stay there for centuries.

What made Vanguard 1 unique compared to early Soviet satellites?
