description Vans Authentic Overview
help Vans Authentic FAQ
What is the difference between the Vans Authentic and the Vans Era?
The Authentic is the simpler original deck-shoe design, while the Era adds a padded collar and was developed with skateboarders Tony Alva and Stacy Peralta. The Era began as Style 95, whereas the Authentic began as Style 44.
Why is the sole of the Vans Authentic called a waffle sole?
Its vulcanized rubber outsole uses Vans' recognizable grid-like tread for grip and board feel. Southern California skateboarders adopted the shoe in the early 1970s partly because that sticky rubber worked well on wooden decks.
Was the Vans Authentic really the company's first shoe?
Yes. Style 44 was among the shoes sold when the Van Doren Rubber Company opened in Anaheim in 1966, and it later became known as the Authentic. Vans formally adopted the Authentic name in 1993.
Does the classic Vans Authentic have a padded collar?
No. The standard Authentic has an unpadded low collar and a basic canvas upper, which helps distinguish it from the Era. Special editions can use suede, leather, added cushioning, or reinforced skate construction.
