The Nike SB Dunk features several skate-specific modifications, including a padded collar for ankle support and a thicker, padded tongue. It also utilizes higher-quality materials like suede and leather to withstand the friction of grip tape, and features a vulcanized rubber outsole. The original Nike Dunk, released in 1985, lacked these skateboarding enhancements.

Generally, Nike SB Dunk Lows fit true to size, but they are historically known to have a slightly narrow toe box compared to modern skate shoes. People with wider feet often prefer to go up half a size for a more comfortable, blister-free fit. The thick interior padding also tends to break in and mold to the foot over time.

The original Nike Dunk was designed by Peter Moore and released in 1985 as a basketball shoe for college teams. It was later adapted into the SB (Skateboarding) line in 2002, customized with features specifically requested by professional skateboarders.
