Velvet dogfish is the common name for Zameus squamulosus, a squaliform shark in the sleeper-shark family Somniosidae. It is a wide-ranging benthopelagic species recorded in the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific oceans, usually along continental slopes and oceanic ridges at several hundred to roughly 2,000 metres, although it can occur higher in the water column. Its skin has very small overlapping scales that give it a velvety appearance.
