Opened in 2011, the 4.62-kilometer bridge was constructed primarily to facilitate container traffic to the Vallarpadam International Container Transshipment Terminal. Built using primarily steel girders supported on concrete pillars, the bridge accommodates only freight trains and is designed to withstand the region's monsoon conditions.
