description Vitskøl Abbey Overview
Vitskøl Abbey is a former Cistercian monastery on the Limfjord in northern Jutland, Denmark, founded in 1158 by King Valdemar I following his victory at the Battle of Grathe Heath. It is among the earliest Cistercian houses established in Denmark. Most of the medieval monastic buildings were demolished after the Reformation, but the surviving ruins are maintained as a heritage site, and the property later became associated with a healing and retreat center.
