W. H. R. Rivers

W. H. R. Rivers joined the 1898 Cambridge Anthropological Expedition to the Torres Strait Islands, where he conducted pioneering psychological experiments and kinship studies among the islanders. The expedition is considered a foundational event in the development of modern British social anthropology.

During World War I, Rivers worked at Craiglockhart War Hospital in Scotland, where he treated soldiers suffering from shell shock using talk therapy and humane methods. His most famous patients included the war poets Siegfried Sassoon and Wilfred Owen, whom he treated with an approach that was remarkably modern for its time.

Rivers is a central character in Pat Barker's Regeneration Trilogy, which dramatizes his work with Siegfried Sassoon at Craiglockhart. The first novel, Regeneration (1991), was adapted into a 1997 film in which Rivers was played by Jonathan Pryce.

Rivers developed systematic methods for recording and analyzing kinship systems during his fieldwork in the Torres Strait and later in Melanesia. His genealogical method, which involved mapping family relationships through structured interviewing, became a standard tool in anthropological fieldwork for decades.
