description Walter Oi Overview
Walter Oi (1929–2013) was an American economist recognized for his foundational research in labor economics and the analysis of fixed costs. Despite being legally blind, he developed rigorous economic models analyzing the true societal costs of military conscription. His intellectual arguments demonstrated the inefficiencies of the draft and helped pave the way for the establishment of the all-volunteer U.S. military force in 1973.
He spent much of his academic career as a professor at the University of Rochester.
