Why Socialism?

Albert Einstein's essay "Why Socialism?" was published in the first issue of the independent socialist magazine Monthly Review in May 1949. The article remains one of the most famous political writings by the prominent historical physicist.

In the essay, Einstein argues that capitalism inherently fosters an "economic anarchy" that leads to severe inequality and the erosion of human dignity. He advocates for the establishment of a planned socialist economy to manage resources more ethically.

While Einstein strongly advocated for a planned economy, he explicitly acknowledged that strict planning could lead to the complete enslavement of the individual. He argued that socialism must be joined to an educational and social system that robustly protects individual rights.

Einstein wrote "Why Socialism?" because he believed that scientists have a moral obligation to address societal problems and the devastating effects of the global economic crisis. He viewed the economic structure of society as a foundational issue that directly impacts global peace.
