Why Socialism? (Einstein essay pamphlet)

In his 1949 essay, Einstein argues that a socialist economic system is necessary to overcome the inherent exploitation of capitalism. He believed that unrestrained competition leads to societal corruption and massive wealth inequality. He specifically critiqued the 'economic anarchy' of capitalist societies.

The essay was originally published in 1949 in the inaugural issue of the American independent Marxist magazine *Monthly Review*. The publication was founded by Leo Huberman and Paul M. Sweezy. It remains one of the most famous pieces ever printed in that magazine.

While famous for his physics, Einstein was a deeply political figure who frequently wrote and spoke about pacifism, civil rights, and democratic socialism. He often used his massive public platform to advocate for global disarmament. He was even offered the presidency of Israel in 1952, which he politely declined.
