description William Cross Overview

William E. Cross Jr. is an American psychologist known for developing the Nigrescence model of Black racial identity development. First formulated in the 1970s and subsequently revised, the model describes changes through which a person may reconsider an earlier worldview, engage more deeply with Black identity, and develop a more secure and complex sense of self.

It became an influential framework in counseling psychology, multicultural psychology, and research on racial identity.
