Its surface area fluctuates seasonally, expanding to roughly 30 to 260 square kilometers. The lake was formed by tectonic activity and is fed by the Jhelum River, which flows through it. It is a designated Ramsar site, recognized for its significant ecological role in managing floods and supporting extensive fish populations.
