Yamaha NS-5000

The Yamaha NS-5000 features bespoke drivers constructed from Zylon, an ultra-strong, lightweight polymer originally developed by the aerospace industry. The speaker uses a 30mm Zylon dome tweeter, an 80mm Zylon midrange dome, and a massive 12-inch woofer. This material allows the drivers to remain perfectly pistonic, preventing distortion.

Unlike some older high-end speakers, the NS-5000 does not strictly require an external EQ, but it does come with dedicated foam absorption rings that attach to the tweeter. These rings allow the user to physically adjust the high-frequency response based on room acoustics. The speaker is engineered to provide a flat, natural response straight out of the box.

The NS-5000 is widely considered the modern spiritual successor to the iconic 1970s NS-1000 monitor speaker. While the NS-1000 used beryllium dome drivers, the NS-5000 utilizes modern Zylon domes for a similarly analytical yet more refined sound. The NS-5000 also features a completely redesigned, resonance-free J-IIT cabinet using traditional Japanese woodworking techniques.

The NS-5000 has a nominal impedance of 8 ohms and a high sensitivity of around 90dB, making them relatively easy to drive for a flagship speaker. They can be successfully paired with both high-wattage solid-state amplifiers and lower-wattage vacuum tube amplifiers. However, due to their resolving nature, they will easily expose the characteristics of your upstream electronics.
