Kingdom of Hungary

Stephen I was crowned the first King of Hungary on Christmas Day in the year 1000. He is credited with converting the Magyar tribes to Western Christianity and formally establishing the state, for which he was later canonized as a saint.

The Habsburg monarchy began ruling parts of Hungary after the Ottomans were pushed out following the 1683 Battle of Vienna. Following the failed 1848 Hungarian Revolution, the kingdom was fully integrated into the Austrian Empire, eventually leading to the 1867 formation of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

Following the Hungarian defeat at the Battle of Mohács in 1526, the central and southern parts of the Kingdom of Hungary fell under Ottoman control for roughly 150 years. This era ended in the late 17th century when the Habsburgs reconquered the territory.

Following World War I, the 1920 Treaty of Trianon drastically reduced the size of the Kingdom of Hungary, stripping it of about two-thirds of its territory. The monarchy was officially abolished in 1946 after the end of World War II, formally ending the kingdom's historical existence.
