help Altiplano FAQ

How high is the Altiplano?

Much of the plateau stands around 3,700 to 4,000 meters above sea level, although its terrain varies considerably. At that elevation, visitors can experience altitude sickness even in major cities such as La Paz and El Alto.

Which countries share the Altiplano?

The plateau lies mainly in Bolivia and Peru, with smaller extensions into Chile and Argentina. It occupies the broad high basin between major eastern and western chains of the Andes.

Are Lake Titicaca and Salar de Uyuni part of the same high plateau system?

Yes. Lake Titicaca occupies the wetter northern Altiplano between Peru and Bolivia, while Salar de Uyuni lies in the drier southern Bolivian sector. Both reflect the plateau's enclosed basins and long geological history.

Why can the Altiplano be cold despite being in the tropics?

Its great elevation keeps temperatures low and creates strong swings between sunny days and freezing nights. Thin, dry air also loses heat quickly after sunset, especially across the arid southern plateau.
