Cape Spear Lighthouse

Cape Spear sits near St. John's on the easternmost point of Newfoundland and is commonly described as Canada's easternmost point. The historic lighthouse there was first lit in 1836, making it Newfoundland's oldest surviving lighthouse.

The 1836 lighthouse is preserved as part of Cape Spear Lighthouse National Historic Site, with period rooms showing how keepers lived. Visitors usually pair it with the newer operating light and the coastal viewpoints overlooking the Atlantic.

Cape Spear also has remains of a Second World War coastal defense battery that guarded the approach to St. John's harbor. The gun emplacements and bunkers are a major part of the site beyond the lighthouse itself.

Cape Spear is just outside St. John's, so it is often visited as a short drive from the city rather than a full-day trip. The draw is the combination of the 1836 lighthouse, Atlantic cliffs, and the easternmost-point marker.
