Amílcar Cabral

Amílcar Cabral founded the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC) in 1956. This organization was the primary driving force behind the armed struggle against Portuguese colonial rule in West Africa.

Cabral led the nationalist movements to liberate both Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde from Portuguese control. He successfully mobilized the rural populations of these West African territories to fight for their independence.

Amílcar Cabral was assassinated in January 1973 in Conakry, Guinea, just months before Guinea-Bissau unilaterally declared its independence. He was murdered by agents with ties to the Portuguese colonial secret police, though the exact circumstances remain debated.

Cabral was famous for his theory of class suicide, urging the African intellectual and urban elite to reconnect with the rural peasantry. He heavily emphasized political education and agricultural development to sustain the long-term independence struggle.
