description Ceylon Caecilian Overview

The Ceylon Caecilian (Ichthyophis glutinosus) is a legless amphibian endemic to Sri Lanka and one of the earliest caecilian species formally described by Western science, originally named by Linnaeus in 1758. Like other caecilians in the order Gymnophiona, it has an elongated, annulated body resembling a large earthworm and spends much of its life burrowing in moist soil. Females lay eggs and exhibit maternal brooding, guarding their clutches until the larvae hatch and move to nearby water.
